Area History
The origins of the zoo lie with the neighbors of Milton Hershey, Franz and Louise Zinner who owned twelve prairie dogs and a bear cub. They knew that Milton Hershey was in the early stages of building Hershey Park and in 1905 met with Milton Hershey about keeping the animals as a park attraction. After a lengthy discussion Hershey and Zimmer decided to build a zoo where Franz Zinner served as the zookeeper.
During Milton Hershey’s lifetime Hershey Zoo was a local attraction. In the era before television, zoos played an important role educating the public about animals and environments different than central Pennsylvania. Today, Zoo America, is a year-round, 11-acre, walk-thru zoo where you learn about more than 200 animals from five regions of North America.
